Does dog urine damage artificial turf?

Unlike natural grass, turf will not develop dead brown spots from urine. However, frequent pet use can create odor or residue issues if the surface and drainage system are not routinely cleaned.

Synthetic fibers do not respond to urine the way living grass does, so the typical “burn” spots associated with natural lawns are not the concern. The practical issue is sanitation and odor management in concentrated pet-use areas.

A pet-ready design combines a permeable turf system with a stable, draining base. Regular rinsing helps dilute residue, while prompt waste removal and brushing prevent organic material from accumulating.

If an odor problem becomes persistent, do not just add more product. A professional can help determine whether the issue is surface residue, infill condition, or a drainage limitation that needs attention.
