What is included in a turf sub-base?
A turf sub-base is the prepared layer below the turf that supports the surface and helps manage water. It may include excavation, compacted aggregate, fine leveling material, and site-specific drainage features.

The exact build-up depends on soil conditions, slope, intended use, and local drainage needs. A solid base should be stable under foot traffic while remaining permeable enough to help water move through the system. It should not be treated as a one-size-fits-all thickness.
North Georgia’s clay soils and sudden rainfall make preparation especially important. A crew may need to correct low areas, address soft spots, or separate soils from aggregate with appropriate materials. The final base is compacted in stages to avoid settlement after installation.
When reviewing a proposal, request a clear description of excavation, base material, compaction, drainage work, and edge restraint. That makes it easier to compare true installation scope rather than only comparing the visible turf product.
